Weekly Update - Sept 26 - 29

 Wishtree Design

We continued our Wishtree design challenge this week. We voted on the most sturdy base structure to continue to build with. The class was then split up into three groups, one group building the branches, one group building the blue house from the story and one group building the green house from the story.

I can construct a structure and explain my choices.

I can work collaboratively with a group.

News Articles

We are working on creating news articles to capture the success of the assembly and Terry Fox Run last week. We learning that news articles are non-fiction texts that include the following elements:

I can use a graphic organizer to help with my writing.

Self Portraits

Students creating a self portrait using a picture of themselves without any pre-teaching/leaning. Over the next couple weeks we will be learning how to draw realistic parts of the face. We will apply these newly learning skills to draw a more accurate and realistic self portrait. We have already noticed a huge change in the way we draw eyes and lips.

I can use sketching techniques to draw realistic pictures.

Smudge

We joined classes with Room 3 and went to the garden for our first smudge of the year. Ms. Brown was kind enough to lead it.

■ We smudge to clear the air around us.

■ We smudge to clean our minds so that we will have good thoughts of others.

■ We smudge our eyes so that we will only see good things in others.

■ We smudge our ears so that we will only listen to good things about others.

■ We smudge our mouths so that we will only speak well of others.

■ We smudge our whole being so that we will portray only the good part of our self through our actions.

Smudging is always voluntary.

Smudging allows people to stop, slow down, and become mindful and centred. This allows people to remember, connect, and be grounded in the event, task, or purpose at hand. Smudging also allows people to let go of negative feelings and thoughts. Letting go of things that inhibit a person from being balanced and focused comes from the feeling of being calm and safe while smudging.

Smudging Protocol and Guidelines Smudging Protocol and Guidelines for School Divisions 2019

After participating in our whole group smudge ceremony, students took time to use their five senses in nature. We came back into the classroom to reflect on our experience.

Library

Our library is now open! Each Wednesday, Room 3 will have the opportunity to go to the library for book exchange. Students have the option to choose one or two books for the week. They can choose to keep both the books at school or bring one home and keep on at school.

Workshop Wednesday

Each Wednesday, Room 2 and 3 will join together to learn a different journalling technique. These are meant to then be applied to students daily work. Students have been invited to create their own ideas to enhance their work, they will then have the option to lead a workshop, if they feel comfortable to do so.
