Weekly Update - Sept 12 - 16

We have started to read the novel Wishtree by Katherine Applegate. While listening to the chapters being read aloud, students draw what they are visualizing. We are working on retelling the story using detailed illustrations of the key components of each chapter.

Here are some examples:

Questions to ask your child:
Why is the book names Wishtree?
What did they predict would happen in the story from the front cover?
What new vocabulary have they learned from the book? - introvert, adorn, mimic, aspirations, pessimist, optimist
What characters have we been introduced to so far? - Red, Bongo, Samar
Who's perspective is the story told by? - Red

We worked on creating a character map of Bongo the crow in the story. We will be adding character traits to our sketch as we are introduced to them.

We created a definition list of all the new words we are learning. Students worked in small groups, learning how to use a dictionary and thesaurus, building our vocabulary.

On Thursday. we celebrated Dot Day by reading the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. When asked what the class thought the lesson of the book was a students responded with, "just give it a try and see where it takes you". The class thought that was a great quote and have decided to use it as our classroom motto for the year.

We each created a portion of a dot to put "our mark" to our classroom.

To learn more about leaves changing colours, we read and annotated a non-fiction article, To survive wintertime, trees drop their leaves. Students were asked to annotate what they already knew, unknown vocabulary, showed where ideas didn't make sense and linked ideas. They then worked on creating jot notes of key parts of the article.

I can use place value to support, interpret and organize numbers.
